Pathogenesis of Acute Pancreatitis

Abstract
Attempts have been made to clarify the pathogenesis of acute pancreatitis but it is still remained obscure. For over a century it has been known that human pancreatitis is often associated with biliary tract diseases and alcoholism.
The Opie¢¥s common channel theory is the oldest and the most important contribution to an understanding of the etiology of acute pancreatitis. Alcohol has been proposed as a causative factor in chronic relapsing pancreatitis by its direct toxicity and indirectly mediated by releasing the gastrointestinal hormones.
In this paper the secretory physiology of exocrine pancreas was briefly reviewed and the pathogenetic factors for acute pancreatitis was discussed.
